How Does Ticket to Read Work?Ticket to Read students can practice important reading skills anywhere, anytime with 24/7 online access. The general sequence of Ticket to Read activities is:
1. First Read- Students complete a cold read to establish a words-per-minute (wpm) reading goal
2. Words to Know- Students are introduced to key vocabulary and have opportunities to demonstrate understanding
3. Think About- Students are introduced to a target comprehension skill or activity with each passage
4. Maze- Students read a passage and select words that complete sentences as they build and show comprehension
5. Quiz- Students listen to and read along with passages and answer multiple-choice questions to earn tickets
6. Clubhouse! Students use the tickets they earn to decorate their personal clubhouse or stock their toy store
Building Foundational Skills - Phonics Component
The phonics component of Ticket to Read is designed to develop foundational phonics skills. Taught in the engaging context of an online toy shop, the characters in this component provide instruction, guidance, and encouragement as students complete practice activities. The activities in this component focus on phonics elements and strategies such as letter names, letter sounds, high-utility blends, high-frequency words, word building, and spelling. As soon as students have mastered a particular number of sounds, they begin reading at the earliest possible opportunity.

The reading component of Ticket to Read comprises hundreds of passages that provide appropriately leveled opportunities for students to build fluency, strengthen vocabulary, and reinforce comprehension.
Narrative and ExpositoryThe ratios of narrative to expository text vary from a 70 to 30 percent mix at Level 1 to a 10 to 90 percent mix in the upper reading levels--this focus on expository is designed to support the reading of content-area texts and informational reading expectations.

Passages are organized into collections and students can choose from 30-40 titles depending on their reading level. There are 16 total levels in Ticket to Read and passages range from grade 1 to grade 7 reading levels.
